Film Friday: Liberated

David and I watched a doctumentary on Netflix titled Liberated: The Next Sexual Revolution (Benjamin Nolot, 2017)
It definitely ignited something within us. As a film student it wasn’t new to discuss the male gaze, social and gender expecatations/anxiety inspired by the media and in pop culture. If that is the type of topic that interests you, I recommend watching this film. Since this film is on Netflix, I won’t say too much but what I will share is the conversation that sparked during and after watching it.
I struggled with what I wanted to say about this film. More accurately, what David and I discussed. So this post will likely be a short one.
One academic talking head shared something that really stood out for me. When we see an image of what, for example, a woman ‘should’ be, that isn’t an issue. It is when we see the same image repeated. This is when we interpret that as the norm. If we were to see majority of the women looking skinny, young, healthy, white, then we are lead to believe that this is what normal looks like. If we were to see images of women of different races, styles, body shape, doing different jobs etc. then that is what normal looks like.
The most important takeaway I got was that maturity is not an age, it is an attitude. An attitude that is a response from knowing the self and open discovery of their place in the world. It also includes the genuine confidence. Look, as a human society we are biologically ingrained to be in a community. So as a result, we are in search for acceptance and acknowledgement that you are “visible”. How we strive to be seen is where the conversation begins.
